Controls should be as simple as possible but not at the expense of not gaining
all the total benefits. Depending on the type of process, traditional control
(e.g. feedforward, lead-lag blocks, etc..) will normally gain 20-30% of the
achievable benefits. I am referencing a document Dr. Culter etall. put out
several years back (approx 1985). In that document, he said that multivariable
control and real time optimization was where the bulk of the benefits were. The
plot I have seen is benefits achievable verses cost of the project. (I have
that document somewhere and I can look it up for you. Right now I am out of the
office). I even saw Honeywell advertising the same claim in the early 1990s.
Since that time the industry has proven Dr. Cutler's claim.
In any case, if you let me know what type of process you are dealing with, I
can try to be more specific.
